Summer Blooms

Dahlias are delicate, almost spiky-looking flowers with hundreds of petals, while hydrangeas are stunning spherical flowers seemingly built from lots of tiny flowers. Available in all kinds of colours, whether you’re going for an ethereal or funky look, these are likely to be used as a beautiful feature in your summer bouquet from The Botanist.

It might seem daunting to care for a summer bouquet in weather that gets hot and humid, but you can definitely maximise its lifetime by caring for it properly. Here are some tips on how to care for your summer flowers and keep your bouquet looking fresh for spreading maximum happiness whether in your home or office space.

When you receive your summer bouquet, make sure you put it in a vase with water with all the stems submerged. The water will need to be changed every couple of days or whenever you notice it getting cloudy. Cold or room temperature water is best for a bouquet since it will contain a variety of flowers and foliage.

When you change the water, be sure to trim the stems of your bouquet using a knife, secateurs, or sharp scissors. Cut them on angle about 1 inch from the bottom to maximise the surface area available for the flowers to soak up water. Also try to keep your bouquet out of the direct sunlight if you can, as in the heat they’re prone to wilting.

Cut dahlias tend to last around three to four days. Hydrangeas, on the other hand, may vary as they can be an especially a tricky flower. It is very important to keep them hydrated. Hydrangeas also feed from their heads so spray them with water daily. If they start to wilt, try submerging the whole bloom in water for 10 minutes and it will perk back up.

Wilting in hydrangeas may also be due to a build up of sap on the stem which prevents them from soaking up water. Try trimming them and plunging the ends into boiling water for up to 30 seconds to clear this blockage, before placing them back into the cold or room temperature water. You can also try adding sugar to the water to feed the stems, or adding soap to the water to keep bacteria away.
